If I understood you correctly, then you need to take it to your bank and they will send it for collection. The money will be deposited into your account as soon as your bank receives the funds. Beware, however, that banks charge high fees for collecting funds from foreign checks. Depending on the amount of the check, it may not be worth it to send it for collection. I do not know what the average collection fees in Australia so you need to ask. My bank in the US, Wachovia, charges US$75.00 per foreign check. Good luck.

Have you tried the check cashing businesses? they would be a likely place. If you would like to try some sites that pay by Paypal or american checks, you can try these. They don't charge you anything. I have proof pic posted.
